The Middle Ages

Utrecht, with its deep roots in the Middle Ages, experienced a period full of dynamism and development stretching from the 5th to the 15th centuries. These centuries are characterised by impressive buildings, significant events and crucial developments.

Some highlights of this period include the construction of the Dom tower, an iconic symbol that dominates Utrecht's skyline to this day, and the construction of the majestic city walls and canals. Utrecht was also an important religious centre, something reinforced by the construction of the canal system and the granting of city rights, which gave Utrecht its unique character.

Moreover, Utrecht was a vital port city. A huge ship from the Middle Ages, exhibited in the basement of the Centraal Museum, testifies to the importance of shipping to the city. Thanks to its favourable location on the Old Rhine and the Vecht, Utrecht had connections to the North Sea and major Rhine cities such as Cologne and Mainz. The rivers facilitated trade in products such as wool, dairy, wood, wine, grain and tuff - a much sought-after building material for the many churches erected during this period.
