The Singel

Long ago, in 1122, Utrecht was honoured with city rights, marking the start of its own city defences. Residents began digging a defensive moat, now known as the singel, and built watchtowers and a wall on an earthen rampart. These structures protected the city for many years.

When the New Dutch Waterline took over, the old city defences lost their function. Demolition of the wall began around 1830. Later, after World War II, city planners even considered filling in the canal. Fortunately, partly due to the efforts of minister Marga Klompé, only part of Catharijnesingel and Weerdsingel was filled in in 1970. It took until 2020 before the canal ran completely around the city centre again.

Walking along the canal takes you past places that bear witness to this history and Utrecht's identity. The Ledig Erf offers a glimpse into everyday life, while the Sonnenborgh takes you to the world of science and stars. Tivoli, as a centre of music and culture, shows the vibrancy of the city. This route is not only a walk through Utrecht, but also a journey through time.
