The Water Tower

The water tower on Rotsoord in Utrecht stands out for its unique architecture. Despite the fact that most water towers in the Netherlands are no longer in use, this 1907 tower, with its impressive height of 37 metres, has been given a new purpose. The lower floors have been converted into a café, while the upper floors serve as a restaurant, called WT Urban Kitchen. In the past, the water tower played a crucial role in Utrecht's water supply. Water towers were originally built to store and deliver pressurised water to households and businesses, a necessity in times when water pressure was insufficient. Although water towers have become obsolete today due to modern water distribution methods, such as pumps and pipes, they remain a characteristic element in the Dutch landscape. In Utrecht and elsewhere in the country, some of these towers are even being converted into homes. WT Urban Kitchen, opened in 2016, offers stunning views of the city. The restaurant is known for its use of local and sustainable products, and the menu is inspired by the seasons. The modern interior, with lots of glass, creates a bright and spacious atmosphere, adding to the unique experience.
