Ubica

Ubica, a national monumental city castle located on Ganzenmarkt, dates back to 1302. Originally known as Huize Compostel, this historic building has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, making it more than 700 years old. Initially built as a defensive structure, the castle was later used as a prison and court.

The castle still contains historical elements, such as a protected corridor where soldiers could hide during attacks. These corridors provided protection from enemies and are a testimony to the building's military function.

The name Ubica is derived from the mattress factory that occupied the premises from 1931 to 1990. After the mattress factory left, the buildings were squatted for a long period of 21 years. This contributed to the unique and complex history of the premises.

Today, Ubica has been transformed into one of Utrecht's cosiest pubs. It combines its historical charm with a lively contemporary atmosphere, making it a popular meeting place for both locals and visitors to the city. Ubica is a symbol of Utrecht's rich history and cultural dynamism.
