Louis Napoleon, younger brother of the Emperor himself, arrived in the Netherlands in 1806 as its newly appointed king. He started in The Hague, but then his eldest son died suddenly, and the grief hit him hard. Combined with his own failing health, he made a decision that would change this corner of Utrecht forever: he wanted a fresh start, and he chose this city.

The building you're looking at now, the Utrecht University Library on the Drift, was quietly assembled for him before he even announced the move. Houses were bought in secret, street by street. One widow refused to sell, so the architects simply worked around her, picking up extra properties on the nearby Wittevrouwenstraat to fill the gap. Renovations under architect J.D. Zocher Sr started in August 1807, and the palace was finished by January 1808.

Louis Napoleon lived here for roughly four months before Amsterdam offered him the entire town hall on Dam Square. He took it. Utrecht's palace faded into a guesthouse for passing royalty, including Napoleon and Marie Louise themselves in 1811.

Today students sit where kings once slept, writing essays in rooms that once hosted an empire.
