Wijk C

District C is a special neighbourhood because it is one of the few remaining working-class areas in the city. It is located near the city centre and is bordered by Oudegracht, Vleutenseweg, Kanaalstraat and Leidseweg. The neighbourhood is known for its authentic look, cosy atmosphere and close-knit community. The neighbourhood owes its name to the former French occupiers. In 1811, the French took over Utrecht and the neighbourhood names of yesteryear were impossible for the French to pronounce. So they decided to simply give the 10 utrecht districts all a letter. After the French returned home, only Wijk C kept its name, the rest of the neighbourhoods were given new names.
