Right in front of you is the oldest Heuriger in all of Vienna. This protected building was founded in 1740 by the Haimböck family, local winemakers who ran their tavern from house number 10 in Alt Ottakring. Their daughter Maria served the wine. The name stuck: 10er Marie.
Crown Prince Rudolf was a regular. He'd arrive with his personal coachman Bratfisch, seeking wine and conversation far from the palace. The composers came too. Franz Schubert. Johann Strauß the elder. The Schrammel brothers with their clarinets. They weren't slumming it. This was the real deal.
In 1935, poet Josef Weinheber sat here and wrote his poem about Alt Ottakring. He was born just up the street and knew these wine cellars, these vaulted rooms, this exact atmosphere.
Käthe Musil took over in 1939 and ran the place for nearly 50 years straight. When she finally retired in 1986, the whole district noticed. Since 1993, the Fuhrgassl Huber family has kept it going. Same wine. Same vaulted ceilings. Same basic idea: pour what you grow.
