See those tall yew hedges stretching out in front of you? They look ancient, but the maze was rebuilt in 1999. The original was laid out around 1720 as an exclusive retreat for the Habsburg imperial family. Nobody else could walk here.

Here's the twist. The original maze wasn't actually a maze. It had no dead ends, no wrong turns. Just tall hedges creating private pathways where emperors and empresses could stroll and have quiet conversations away from prying eyes. Think of it as royal privacy hedges rather than a puzzle.

By 1892, the hedges were completely gone. Cut down, cleared, erased. For 107 years, this spot was just empty ground. The maze existed only in old drawings and palace records.

When they reconstructed it in 1999, they used those historical plans but added the confusing twists you'll find inside. Now 1,715 square meters of hedges spiral toward a viewing platform at the center. Look for the 12 zodiac signs hidden throughout. And if you make it to the middle, you'll find 2 harmony stones next to the platform. According to feng shui principles, placing your hands on them strengthens your energy flow.
