Shoah Wall of Names

More than 64,000 names carved in stone tell a story most never knew. Each name represents an Austrian Jewish child, woman, or man whose life was stolen during the Holocaust, a truth Austria struggled to confront for decades.

In Ostarrichi Park, in front of the Austrian National Bank, 160 granite walls form a 200 meter oval where visitors walk surrounded by thousands of engraved names and birth years.

This is Austria's first memorial to list every victim by name rather than reducing them to statistics. The idea came from Kurt Yakov Tutter, a Holocaust survivor born in 1930 who fled to Belgium in 1939. His parents were deported to Auschwitz and murdered there. For nearly 20 years, Tutter fought to create a place where each victim would be remembered as an individual with their own identity.

For decades, Austria portrayed itself as a victim of Nazi Germany rather than acknowledging the active role many Austrians played in the persecution. The memorial, inaugurated on November 9, 2021, the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht, changed that narrative. The inscription is direct: the victims were persecuted, mocked, robbed, and tortured by National Socialists and their supporters, and countless Austrians participated in their murder.
