Here, at 384 Keizergracht, the three gates once opened the doors of the very first theatre in Amsterdam specialising in theatrical performances. On 3 January 1637, the first performance took place, namely of Gijsbrecht van Vondel. It was a great success and a New Year's tradition was born that would continue for centuries. At the time, the stage was sophisticated with revolving tableaux that allowed decors to be changed within seconds and backdrops that could be lowered by means of ropes and cables.

In 1772, tragedy struck the theatre: a fire broke out on stage and the entire building burned to the ground, killing 11 visitors. After the fire, all the debris was carefully sifted to collect all the gold and jewellery of the, sometimes wealthy, victims. On 14 May 1772, a man from Rotterdam published a pamphlet in which he wrote: 'I consider the burning down of your theatre to be a special judgement of God on that godless theatre, which is a cross for all pious people, a plague of the civil state, a vandalism of the church, a shameful brothel, a school of filth, a shop of unholy defects'. By this, the Rotterdam native wanted to indicate that the fire was an action of God because of the wicked performances that were being staged in the theatre.

Today, the three gates are the entrance to the exclusive Dylan hotel. This historic property now offers luxury accommodation to guests looking for a unique and intimate experience in the heart of Amsterdam. The hotel has retained characteristic features and is an ode to this building's rich past. Not surprisingly, the Dylan hotel is one of Amsterdam's most special and beloved hotels.
