On the Keizersgracht, in the heart of Amsterdam, stands an impressive house with a façade stone depicting the port of Marseille. In 1665, the French merchant Isaac Fouquier built his home here, proudly displaying the wealth he had earned through overseas trade.
Since 1999, the building has housed Huis Marseille, the Netherlands’ first photography museum. Spread across fourteen rooms in two adjoining canal houses, visitors are treated to contemporary photography set against the backdrop of seventeenth-century elegance. Ceiling paintings, wood paneling, and old stucco form a striking contrast with the modern images on the walls.
One highlight is the garden room, where a 1730 ceiling painting by Jacob de Wit can be seen. Once housed in the Rijksmuseum, it returned to its original home in 2004.
