The Scream

Hear the cry for justice in a sculpture that won’t be silenced.

The artwork "The Scream," designed by Jeroen Henneman, acts as a memorial in memory of Theo van Gogh. Van Gogh met his tragic end on 2 November 2004 as a result of an attack by Muslim extremist Mohammed B. This sculpture symbolises the complex balance of "freedom of speech" in the Netherlands, which is sometimes at odds. Van Gogh was symbolically silenced, as he was known for his provocative views in which he often criticised the Muslim community.

His controversial opinions, which often led to violent reactions, contributed to his controversial status as a public figure. Van Gogh's murder caused a profound impact in the Netherlands and specifically in Amsterdam, where he lived and worked. To this day, this event remains one of the most remarkable politically-related murders in the history of the Netherlands.

According to artist Jeroen Henneman, the artwork carries the message "to Theo van Gogh, crying out for mercy." The artwork, placed in this significant location, reflects the importance of free speech and recalls the impact of violence on public discourse and society as a whole. "The Scream" is not only a tribute to the life and tragic death of Theo van Gogh, but also to the ongoing and urgent discussions about freedom, expression and its challenges in modern societies.
