In the heart of Antwerp’s busy city life lies Leopold Square, a plaza named after Leopold I, the first King of Belgium. Here stands an impressive equestrian statue portraying him as a proud monarch on horseback. The bronze monument, unveiled in 1872, symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter in Belgian history.

Leopold I was born in 1790 as a prince of Saxe-Coburg. He grew up in a world of military discipline and diplomacy and moved effortlessly among Europe’s great courts. After a life full of intrigue—during which he even declined the Greek throne—he accepted the Belgian crown in 1831, shortly after the country’s independence. His international experience, language skills, and diplomatic talents gave the young state an immediate and respected place on the European stage.

During his reign, he laid the foundations for a stable monarchy. He secured Belgium’s independence, signed important treaties, and promoted trade and industry. Leopold understood the strategic importance of Antwerp as a gateway to the world and emphasized the city’s role in the country’s prosperity.
