We are standing at the Kipdorp site, right in the Leien district. Here you can still see a visible piece of the old Spanish city wall, a tangible reminder of 16th‑century Antwerp.

This impressive fortification was built between 1542 and 1553 on the orders of Emperor Charles V. It replaced the medieval walls and was one of the most modern defensive structures in Europe at the time. Ten‑meter‑high brick walls with five city gates and nine bastions, such as the Red Gate and the Huidevetter Tower, enclosed the city. The Kipdorp Gate, whose foundations you see here, was one of the main entrances to Antwerp, carefully controlling the flow of people and goods.

For centuries, this wall provided protection during sieges and uprisings like the Spanish Fury. But by the 19th century it stood in the way of the city’s growth. In the 1860s the wall was demolished and broad boulevards, today’s Leien, took its place.

Here, the foundations of the Kipdorp Gate and parts of the old wall have been uncovered and integrated into the site. Behind glass and with information panels, you can see how this wall once shaped the city and its history.
