Welcome to Antwerp’s Jewish Quarter, a neighborhood filled with history and tradition. Here, around the Central Station and the Diamond District, lives a community that has shaped the city’s cultural and economic fabric for centuries.

The first Jews arrived in the Middle Ages, often fleeing persecution in England, Spain, or Portugal. In the 16th century, Marranos settled here—Jews who secretly kept their faith while forced to convert to Christianity on the Iberian Peninsula.

Later, under Austrian and French rule, they gained more freedom, and after Belgian independence in 1831 Judaism was officially recognized. From the late 19th century onward, thousands of Eastern European Jews arrived, followed by refugees from Germany before World War II. By 1940, Antwerp counted more than 35,000 Jewish residents.

The diamond industry became the beating heart of their economic life. Hundreds of workshops and traders turned Antwerp into a global diamond hub. But the war dealt a heavy blow: thousands were deported and never returned.

After liberation, the community rebuilt itself. Today, Antwerp is home to an estimated 20,000 Jews, with a strong Orthodox presence. The neighborhood has numerous synagogues, kosher shops, schools, and still active diamond businesses.
