We are standing here in the Seefhoek, the neighborhood that gave its name to the legendary Seef beer. Centuries ago, this was the beer of the common Antwerper. In small taverns and on the squares of this district, dockworkers and craftsmen would enjoy a fresh pint of Seef after work—or even during the day, as its alcohol content was low.

Seef beer was a cloudy wheat beer with oats, buckwheat, and a soft, thirst-quenching taste. It symbolized social life in the city: simple, affordable, and loved by everyone.

Only later did the beer become so closely tied to this neighborhood. In the Seefhoek, where many workers and breweries were located, it found its biggest following and became part of daily life. Taverns and small breweries in this area turned Seef beer into a true people’s drink, inseparably linked to the place where we are now.

With industrialization and the rise of stronger pils beers, Seef gradually disappeared from cafés and its recipe was nearly forgotten. But in the 21st century it was brought back to life by brewers eager to revive the old tradition. Today you can once again enjoy Seef beer in Antwerp cafés—a tribute to this neighborhood and its working-class past.
