We are in front of the Gothic Cathedral, where the ancient Fira de Santa Llúcia Christmas market transforms the surrounding streets into a festive wonderland each December. Among the hundreds of stalls selling nativity figures, one particular character stands out with his dropped trousers and squatting pose. El Caganer, literally the defecator, is a small ceramic figurine that has been hiding in Catalan nativity scenes since the late 1600s or early 1700s.

Traditionally crafted as a peasant wearing the red barretina cap, this character is depicted in the act of relieving himself. While it might seem unusual to outsiders, Catalans consider him essential for bringing fertility and prosperity to the household in the coming year. Families place the Caganer discreetly in their nativity scene, usually behind a tree, barn, or rock formation, creating a playful treasure hunt for children. The tradition reflects a down to earth Catalan philosophy captured in a local saying: eat well, defecate strongly, and don't fear death.

The practice spread beyond religious scenes in recent decades. Artisans now create versions featuring footballers, politicians, musicians, and cultural icons. Each year brings fresh interpretations, with ceramic figures of celebrities and public personalities appearing at market stalls, transforming this centuries old peasant into everyone from Lionel Messi to world leaders.
