Beneath this square lies a mass grave of thousands who chose death over surrender. Adjacent to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in the Born neighborhood, Fossar de les Moreres marks where defenders of the 1714 Siege were buried after fighting to preserve their laws and freedom. The siege lasted 13 months during the War of the Spanish Succession. While European powers signed peace treaties in 1713, the Catalan people stood alone, refusing to accept King Philip V.

They knew surrender meant losing their parliament, legal system, and centuries of self governance under the Crown of Aragon. On September 11, 1714, after relentless bombardment that destroyed a third of the city, Bourbon troops breached the walls at dawn. Approximately 6,850 Catalans died in the final assault. The fallen were buried in this cemetery, which had served the adjacent church since medieval times.

The site takes its name from the mulberry trees that once grew here, morera meaning mulberry in Catalan. An eternal flame burns above the square, installed in 2001 by architect Alfons Viaplana. Red bricks pave the ground, representing the bloodshed. A marble plaque bears words from poet Frederic Soler: in the Fossar de les Moreres, no traitor shall be buried. Every September 11, this site becomes the focal point of remembrance for Catalonia's National Day.
