Messi is living heritage. Fast-moving, breathtaking, and arguably the most beautiful thing football has ever produced. And it nearly never happened.

At 13, Leo arrived from Rosario, Argentina, already rejected by clubs back home because he was too small and needed expensive growth hormone treatment his family simply couldn't afford. River Plate had watched him play and walked away. Barcelona hesitated too, until sporting director Carles Rexach saw him train for a few minutes and said he'd seen enough. The contract was signed that same day on a paper napkin from a tennis club. That crumpled little serviette, just 16 by 16 centimetres, sold at auction in 2024 for over 762,000 pounds.

Barcelona didn't just sign him. They paid for his medical treatment, found his father a job, and arranged a flat for the family. Messi was so shy in that first year that some teammates thought he couldn't speak.

He could, of course. He just preferred to let his feet do the talking. Over 17 years, he scored 672 goals, won 10 league titles, and collected 8 Ballon d'Or trophies, more than any player in history.

When he left in 2021, Barcelona's debts meant his contract couldn't be registered. The man who had given everything walked out as a free transfer, exactly as he had arrived: with nothing on paper worth keeping, except this time, the napkin was worth a fortune.
