You are at the heart of one of the world's greatest medieval art collections, standing before treasures that were once hidden in remote mountain churches across the Catalan Pyrenees. The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya is home to the finest collection of Romanesque wall paintings ever assembled. Perched on Montjuïc hill inside the grand Palau Nacional, this museum preserves artworks that nearly vanished from history.

Between 1919 and 1923, Italian technicians embarked on a daring rescue mission, carefully removing centuries-old frescoes from crumbling churches in the Pyrenees mountains and bringing them here for safekeeping. The crown jewel is the Apse of Sant Climent de Taüll, a stunning 12th century fresco painted around 1123. It shows Christ in Majesty holding a book inscribed "EGO SUM LUX MUNDI," meaning “I am the light of the world.”

The unknown artist, called the Master of Taüll, used imported pigments and layered painting techniques so advanced that the colors still blaze with intensity today. He applied blue over black and red over darker tones to create depth that captivates visitors nine centuries later. The Palau Nacional opened as an art museum in 1934, reuniting scattered pieces of Catalonia's artistic heritage. After major renovations by Italian architect Gae Aulenti, it reopened on December 16, 2004 as one of Spain's largest museums, displaying over 260,000 artworks spanning 1,000 years.
