Welcome to the world's first museum dedicated entirely to Pablo Picasso, opened while the legendary artist was still alive. Along the medieval Carrer de Montcada in the historic Ribera district, five adjoining Gothic palaces from the 13th to 15th centuries house over 4,250 works that trace the artistic evolution of one of history's most influential artists.

The Museu Picasso opened on March 9, 1963, born from an extraordinary friendship between Picasso and Jaume Sabartés, his lifelong friend and secretary who donated 574 works from his personal collection to establish the museum. This collection focuses on Picasso's formative years from 1895 to 1904, when he lived here as a teenager and young artist.

During this period, he studied at the prestigious La Llotja art academy, spent countless hours at the legendary Els Quatre Gats café meeting fellow artists, and laid the groundwork for his revolutionary artistic style that would transform modern art. In 1970, Picasso made a remarkable gesture by donating 920 works that his family had carefully preserved, including rare pieces from his earliest creative period.

The museum showcases masterpieces like his complete 58 painting series reinterpreting Velázquez's Las Meninas and exceptional works from his Blue Period, revealing the deep connection between the artist and the city that shaped his genius.
