Here stands a bronze warrior on horseback, gazing over ancient Roman walls and Gothic spires, the man who turned Catalonia into a Mediterranean empire. This is Ramon Berenguer III, called the Great, Count of Barcelona who ruled from 1097 to 1131. Where Via Laietana meets centuries of history, his equestrian statue rises before the 4th century Roman fortifications crowned by the Chapel of Santa Àgata, a striking blend of imperial and medieval power.

Born in 1082, Ramon Berenguer became count at just 14 when his father died. While Almoravid Muslim forces pushed toward the city gates, the young ruler fought back ferociously. Yet his legacy was built not merely on defense but on daring expansion. In 1114 and 1115, he joined forces with the Italian city of Pisa to launch naval strikes against the Balearic Islands. These raids freed thousands of enslaved Christians and crushed pirate strongholds terrorizing Mediterranean trade.

By 1118, he had recaptured Tarragona and made it the religious center of Catalonia. His marriage to Douce of Provence in 1112 extended Catalan influence north across the Pyrenees. Ramon Berenguer forged vital trade treaties with Genoa and other Italian maritime powers, spreading Catalan merchant ships throughout the western Mediterranean. Under his command, Catalonia reached its greatest medieval power and prosperity.
