Hidden behind a narrow gateway just steps from Plaça de Catalunya lies a church that once offered medieval pilgrims something extraordinary: the same spiritual forgiveness they would receive in Jerusalem, without the perilous journey. In a quiet plaza away from the bustling shopping streets, the Church of Santa Anna was built around 1177 by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

This religious and military order protected Christian sites in the Holy Land and established communities across Europe. What made Santa Anna remarkable was its unique spiritual privilege. The Order granted this church the power to offer pilgrims the same indulgences as those who traveled to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem itself. For medieval travelers, this meant receiving forgiveness for their sins without crossing continents or risking their lives on dangerous roads filled with bandits and disease.

The church was deliberately designed to mirror its Jerusalem counterpart, with a Greek cross floor plan connecting worshippers to the sacred site thousands of miles away. Construction spanned three centuries, blending Romanesque foundations with Gothic elegance. The 15th century cloister and soaring vaulted ceilings reflect this architectural evolution. Declared a National Monument in 1881, Santa Anna survived religious persecution in 1873 and bombing during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939.
