Long before the vibrant streets and modernist architecture, this city began as something much smaller. A Roman military colony called Barcino. Founded between 15 and 13 BC during the reign of Emperor Augustus, Barcino was established on top of Mount Taber, a modest hill rising just 25 meters above sea level. Where Plaça de Sant Jaume stands in the old quarter, Roman soldiers marked out their new home with precision.

The settlement was built for retired legionaries from the Cantabrian Wars, offering them land as a reward for service. The original colony was tiny. Walls just 1.5 kilometers long enclosed barely 12 hectares of land. By the 2nd century, Barcino housed around 3,500 to 5,000 people. It remained far less important than nearby Tarraco, the regional capital. But when Germanic tribes threatened the empire in the 3rd century, everything changed.

Barcino's walls were rebuilt, soaring up to 8 meters high and reinforced with 78 defensive towers. These formidable fortifications made it the strongest walled city in the entire region, transforming Barcino from a quiet outpost into a strategic stronghold that would shape the future of this place. Hidden beneath Plaça del Rei, the ancient Roman streets still exist, preserved 2,000 years after soldiers first walked them.
