Welcome to one of Spain's oldest seats of learning, founded in 1450 but silenced for over a century as political punishment. The University of Barcelona began when King Alfonso the Magnanimous united earlier medical and arts schools into a single Estudi General. With papal approval from Pope Nicholas V, it offered degrees in theology, law, philosophy, medicine, and the liberal arts, quickly becoming a centre of intellectual life. Everything changed in 1714.

After the War of the Spanish Succession, King Philip V closed the university and moved all higher education to Cervera, over 100 kilometres inland. For 123 years, formal university education vanished from the city. Medical students refused to travel so far from the Hospital de la Santa Creu, where the best doctors practised, and some studied secretly in defiance of royal orders.

The university returned in 1837. At the edge of the expanding Eixample district, architect Elies Rogent designed a monumental neo-Romanesque building on Plaça Universitat, completed between 1863 and 1882. The grand structure features elegant courtyards and an ornate Moorish-style assembly hall. With 76,000 students and over 5,000 researchers, it now ranks first among Spanish universities, its historic building remaining the symbolic heart of Catalan academia.
