In the heart of the 12th arrondissement lies the Marché d’Aligre, established in 1779 to supply food to the former working-class and craft district of Faubourg Saint-Antoine. What makes this market area unique are its four distinct atmospheres: the lively open-air market along Rue d’Aligre, the antique and curio stalls on Place d’Aligre, the historic covered Halle Beauvau, and the informal apéro tables where locals gather after shopping.

Its authentic charm partly stems from generations of vendors – many have continued family traditions since the early 20th century, particularly from North Africa. Stalls and licenses are often passed from father to son. Inside the 1843 covered market, you’ll find traditional French specialties like calf’s brain, cured meats, salted fish, and even horsemeat – ingredients rarely seen elsewhere in Paris.

A lesser-known fact: in the 1950s, the neighborhood created the ‘Commune libre d’Aligre’ – a local collective for urban conviviality, combining protest with community spirit, still active today from the Petite Mairie on Place d’Aligre. Tourists often miss the post-market vibrancy: locals sip wine at Le Baron Rouge or on a street corner, sharing in a tradition where shopping and community go hand in hand.
