Freemasonry, as a concept, is a fraternal organisation that is generally concerned to be a secret society. It originates from colonial backgrounds, especially through the conquests of the British Empire across the world. Because of the empire’s actions, the Freemasons has become a global secret society, but what strives it away from other organisations formed from the ideas of colonisation is that Freemasonry holds no religious ties.

It is an organisation that is completely isolated from the concept of religion. However, there are different designations of this secret society across its countries. France remains as one of the more open of these organisations. Compared to the British isles, and their previous colonies, the French Freemasons allow both men and women into the secret society, making it rather unique in .

The freemasons, as a concept, require the belief of a ‘Supreme Being’ in most contexts. However, the only global requirements of the Freemasons Secret Society is for its elements to be followed. Examples of what the freemasons stand for include enjoined morality, as well as being charitable to those who need help, either physically, mentally, or financially. It teaches general concepts of being a kind, well-mannered individual, as well as to remain lawful.

Freemasonry within France has been a concept and organisation since the 18th century, making it well over four centuries old, as of 2021, when it had its 400 year anniversary.. It originates from , and became more renowned as time went on. In the current day, masonic lodges can be found all across the country, especially within the capital city, Paris.

They have had ties to the French Revolution, due to its alignment with the mason’s ideologies, aligning specifically with the idea of France being a democratic nation, rather than a monarchistic nation. The freemasons of France have always been integral to the culture of the nation. Creatives of all backgrounds have been notable members, including artists, writers, musicians, historians, and politicians.
