Look at those two towers flanking the gate on Rue des Archives. They've been standing since 1375, the oldest things you'll see today. They're all that remains of a fortified manor built by Olivier de Clisson, Constable of France. Everything around them got rebuilt and reimagined over the centuries, but those towers simply refused to move.

The building passed through some dark hands. The Duke of Guise once owned it, and in 1572, he used it to plan the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, a coordinated killing spree targeting Protestant Huguenots across France. Thousands died. Not exactly the kind of dinner party you'd want to attend.

Things took a much lighter turn in the 1700s. François de Rohan-Soubise and his wife hired star architect Pierre-Alexis Delamair to reshape the place entirely. Inside, Germain Boffrand added rococo interiors, all gilded swirls, mirrors, and ceiling paintings by François Boucher. Light pours through everything.

Today it houses the National Archives and a museum. So yes, this building went from medieval fortress to murder plot headquarters to France's most glamorous filing cabinet. Quite the career.
