If you have the feeling you are being watched? Well… thats correct. Actually, by 338 sculptures of famous Parisians, carved by around 230 different sculptors. It is essentially the world's most prestigious yearbook, chiseled in stone.

But the real stories are hidden deeper. Literally. Beneath your feet runs a secret tunnel, built in 1807, connecting the Hôtel de Ville to a nearby barracks. In 1870, when revolutionaries stormed the building, government officials slipped away through that tunnel like students sneaking out of school. History, it turns out, often exits through the back door.

Above ground, things were rarely quieter. Since 1357, Paris has been governed from this spot. Medieval executions happened here. The guillotine showed up during the Revolution. Then, in 1871, a devastating fire gutted the entire building. They rebuilt it with an even more lavish interior, as if to say: fine, we will make it better.

The most extraordinary moment came in 1944. After four years of Nazi occupation, Charles de Gaulle stood right here and addressed a city dizzy with relief. The Hôtel de Ville had served as Resistance headquarters, and suddenly, Paris was Paris again.

Not bad for a city hall, right?
