We could tell a hundred stories about the Moulin Rouge and its performers – and maybe we will. But this story is about La Goulue. Louise Weber, born in 1866 in Clichy, worked as a young woman in a laundry. She loved to dance and would sneak into Montmartre’s dance halls at night, often without paying.

Her nickname, La Goulue, meaning “the glutton,” came from her cheeky habit of downing the drinks of spectators while performing – and from her insatiable love of attention. With unmatched energy and a daring style, she became the star of the Moulin Rouge. She danced the chahut, an early form of the cancan, often alongside her tall, limber partner Valentin le Désossé. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created iconic posters of her, making her famous beyond Paris. But La Goulue was more than a dancer.

She was the queen of Montmartre, loved for her humor and audacity. She danced her way out of obscurity, proving that someone from humble beginnings could become a world-famous star. After 1895, she left the Moulin Rouge to start a traveling fair show, but the venture failed. She eventually died poor and forgotten in Paris. Yet in Montmartre, she is still remembered as the woman who turned Parisian nights upside down.
