At the intersection of Oberkampf and rue de la Folie‑Méricourt, the vibrant atmosphere of the Oberkampf district unfolds with a blend of old crafts and modern urban life. Originally called Chemin de Ménilmontant, the street was renamed after Christophe‑Philippe Oberkampf, founder of the Jouy textile factory in the eighteenth century.

In the 1990s, the street experienced an artistic revival as creatives moved in, while cafés like Café Charbon (since 1863) and bistronomy venues such as La Villaret (1992) maintained the neighborhood’s vitality. Passages like Cité Durmar and Cité Figuier reveal former artisan workshops. Culinary hotspots such as La Belle Mer (seafood café), L’Arbre à Café (organic coffee), bakeries and butcher shops remain local favorites.

Cirque d’Hiver at 110 Rue Amelot also lies within the area. Lined with shops, bars and galleries, Oberkampf remains a popular spot for residents and visitors alike. Oberkampf thus offers an authentic Parisian experience where history meets contemporary culture.
