You're standing in front of one of Paris's most underrated gems. While the crowds pour into the Louvre just across the street, the Palais-Royal quietly holds some of the city's most extraordinary stories.

Start by stepping into the gardens. Duchess Henrietta Anne designed them herself, and they're worth every second. Look out for the black-and-white striped columns scattered across the courtyard. That's Daniel Buren's installation from 1986, still dividing opinion today.

Now here's what most visitors don't know. Police were legally banned from entering this grounds. That made it the only truly free zone in pre-revolutionary Paris. Gambling dens, brothel catalogues, and radical pamphlets circulated openly here. It was delightfully lawless.

And in July 1789, a journalist named Camille Desmoulins jumped onto a table at the Café de Foy, just inside these arcades, and called the people to arms. Two days later, the Bastille fell.

So do yourself a favor. Walk through the archway, slow down, and let the gardens surprise you.
