Standing on the Place de la République in Paris, you feel the pulse of the city and the weight of its history. This vast square at the crossroads of three arrondissements was once known as the Place du Château d’Eau, but in 1879 it was renamed and became the symbol of the French Republic.

At its center rises the impressive Monument à la République, with a bronze statue of Marianne representing freedom and civil rights. Over the centuries, this square has played a leading role in city life: from celebrations and protests to commemorations after the 2015 attacks. During a major renovation in 2013, the square was made more pedestrian-friendly, with lots of space for people and events.

Now it’s a gathering place for protest, remembrance, and celebration. Around you are fountains, trees, wide boulevards, and lively cafés. The monument with Marianne, her olive branch, and the famous tablet of human rights reminds you that this is the beating heart of Parisian democracy—a place you simply must see.
