The Pont de l’Alma connects the 7th and 8th arrondissements across the Seine and commemorates the Battle of Alma in the Crimean War. Construction began in 1854 under Napoleon III’s orders and the design by Paul‑Martin Gallocher de Lagalisserie was inaugurated in 1856.

Each of the four piers is topped by a statue of a military figure relevant to the battle. In the early 1970s the bridge underwent major renovations for traffic flow. Today it measures approximately 153 meters long and 42 meters wide. The Zouave statue on one pier serves as an informal flood gauge: during Paris’s great flood of 1910 the water reached its shoulder.

The bridge is also associated with the tragic 1997 death of Princess Diana — she died in a crash in the tunnel beneath Pont de l’Alma. A tribute flame, the Flame of Liberty, stands nearby. The blend of architectural beauty, historical symbolism, and emotional resonance makes this spot deeply moving.
