Pim Fortuyn

Few politicians have shaken a country to its core without ever spending a single day in office.

The figure standing before you captured something real about the man it represents: confident, forward-facing, impossible to ignore. This is Pim Fortuyn, and his story is one of the most turbulent in modern Dutch history.

Born in 1948, Fortuyn came up through academia as a sociology professor before turning to politics in the early 2000s. What set him apart was his style as much as his substance. He was theatrical, sharp, and utterly unafraid of controversy. In a political culture built on quiet consensus and backroom compromise, he walked in talking loudly about immigration, Dutch identity, and government inefficiency. People were either fascinated or furious, and sometimes both.

In early 2002, he founded Lijst Pim Fortuyn, and the polls went wild almost immediately. Then, on May 6, 2002, just nine days before the elections, he was shot dead at the Mediapark in Hilversum. The killer feared his growing influence. The country was stunned.

Fortuyn never governed, never sat in parliament, never signed a single law. Yet his ideas reshaped Dutch political debate in ways that echo clearly to this day.

The statue, fittingly, gives him the last word.
