She has been standing here since 1982, eyes fixed on the horizon, waiting for someone who may never return.

The bronze woman standing before you on Scheveningen's wide boulevard has been keeping her vigil for decades. Created by sculptor Gerard Bakker and unveiled by Queen Beatrix on November 10, 1982, she represents every wife, mother, and daughter who ever watched a fishing boat disappear into the North Sea and wondered if it would come back.

Her gaze never wavers. Dressed in traditional Scheveninger attire, she looks out toward the water with the kind of quiet strength that only comes from long practice. This statue was never meant to celebrate the sea's romance. It honors the grief of those left behind, including the families of marines and merchant sailors from Scheveningen who were lost during World War II.

At the base, an inscription captures that particular mix of faith and sorrow that shaped life in this coastal town for generations:

"The sea, which always took, will one day return again, all those who remained, to Him who first escaped, the Lord of wind and water, to Christ the Triumphant."

Those words still carry weight. The sea gives, the sea takes, and the people of Scheveningen have always understood both sides of that bargain better than most.
