The Hague has always attracted power, diplomacy, and prestige. The Binnenhof, the Peace Palace, the grand ministries lining its boulevards. But if you spend a little time talking to the people here, you quickly realize that the city's real character has nothing to do with any of that.

Hagenezen, as the locals call themselves, are direct to a fault. They say what they mean, and they mean what they say. It might catch you off guard at first, but you come to appreciate it. There is something refreshing about a culture that has no patience for pretense.

Much of that spirit traces back to the old fishing communities that once worked these North Sea shores. Life on the water was hard and unpredictable, and it built people who looked out for each other. That sense of solidarity never left. You still feel it in the neighborhoods today, in the cozy cafés, in the crispy kibbeling served straight from the harbor.

Music runs through the city too. Golden Earring and Shocking Blue both started here, and local legend Harrie Jekkers wrote "O, O, Den Haag," a song that every true Hagenees knows by heart. It is part love letter, part battle cry, and completely untranslatable. Which, honestly, is very on brand.
