Imagine arriving in Utrecht late one evening in the 14th century. The city gates are shut, it's dark, and you're stuck outside with nowhere to go. That's exactly the problem this building was created to solve. The Bartholomeus Gasthuis, right here on Lange Smeestraat, started in 1367 as St Apollonia Gasthuis, offering pilgrims and the poor a bed for a night or two, nothing more.

Within a few decades, it had grown into something more substantial. From 1378 onward, the gasthuis focused on caring for the sick, while other institutions around Utrecht took in people suffering from plague or syphilis. Private donations steadily changed the place, allowing elderly people who couldn't care for themselves to stay longer and eventually live there permanently.

After the Reformation, the Protestants took over poor relief across the city and the convents closed, but private guesthouses like this one survived as old people's homes, where men and women lived in separate quarters. In 1817, all Utrecht guesthouses merged under one umbrella organization, yet the Bartholomeus Gasthuis carried on.

Today it still functions as a care home for the elderly, which means this building has been doing the same job, more or less, for well over six hundred years. That's a pretty impressive track record for a place that started out as a one-night shelter.
