Utrecht's city centre has an enchanting, almost fairytale appearance. This is mainly due to its unique houses, each with their own flamboyant decorations and distinct features from different construction periods. A special element in this city are its picturesque courtyards, similar to the serene, traffic-free courtyards in Amsterdam.

A striking example is the Bruntenhof, founded in 1621 by lawyer Frederik Bunt. Originally intended to house poor widows, this hofje provided them not only with free shelter but also with all the necessities of life. Although these cottages are now occupied, many original details, such as bedsteads, are still present. The status of these cottages as monuments also means that owners are restricted in making changes.

Another well-known hofje in Utrecht is the Doelenhofje. This hofje originally had a religious function as a beguinage and is located near a church. Later, it was transformed into a convent. These historical hofjes, with their unique charm and history, contribute to the fairytale character of Utrecht's city centre.
