Until the 12th century, wooden houses dominated the cityscape, as natural stone was out of reach of most inhabitants. This changed with the reinvention of brick technology at the end of this century, which made stone houses more affordable. Clay, needed for brick production, was widely available in the Utrecht area, which encouraged the rise of brick buildings. Initially, these stone houses were still a symbol of affluence, something the wealthier Utrechters liked to show off by building imposing dwellings that were in no way inferior to small castles in appearance.

With the rise of chivalry in the 13th century, owning a stone house became even more important. The nobility and wealthy sought to have dwellings that were not only defensible but also confirmed their high status. This led to the construction of some striking city castles in Utrecht, such as Drakenburg, Rodenburg, and Het Hertenhuis. These buildings, with their robust walls, battlements and towers, symbolised the power and wealth of their owners. They often had several floors and a large hall for receptions, exuding the grandeur of medieval nobility.

Drakenburg and Rodenburg, with their castle-like features such as battlements and defensible towers, and Het Hertenhuis, famous for its unique architecture that exuded wealth and power, are examples of how Utrecht's elite displayed their status and wealth. These houses were not only living spaces but also symbols of social status and part of the city's defence strategy.
