Located in the western part of Amsterdam and named after its neighbourhood, Haarlemmerdijk is a renowned shopping street with a varied and independent range of shops, which goes hand in hand with a vibrant and dynamic ambiance.

Along Haarlemmerdijk there is a variety of shops, ranging from fashionable boutiques to specialist home furnishing shops. Moreover, the street is home to several eating and drinking establishments, including restaurants, cafés and bars, making it a popular location for both a tasty meal and pleasant conversations.

Besides the various shops and catering facilities, Haarlemmerdijk is home to several cultural and creative hubs, such as galleries and studios. A popular draw for locals and tourists alike, this street is known for its distinctive and independent character.

Interestingly, the history of Haarlemmerdijk dates back to before the 1593 city expansion, where the Haarlemmerpoort was located at the level of the Singel. After this gate was moved to the west, Spaarndammerdijk came to lie within the city walls and the first part was renamed Haarlemmerstraat. The Haarlemmerdijk itself was constructed during the creation of the initial part of the Grachtengordel from 1612.

Notable sights on the Haarlemmerstraat include the imposing West India House and the atmospheric Posthoorn Church. The year 2012 saw the election of the combination of Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk as the 'nicest shopping street in the Netherlands'. In short, a visit to Haarlemmerdijk offers not only shopping pleasure, but also a dip into Amsterdam's rich history and its vibrant contemporary culture.
