Now here's something the Jordaan is truly famous for, and honestly, Amsterdam as a whole: het hofje. And we're standing right in front of one. This is the Raepenhofje. You can usually walk in, but please keep your voice down. People actually live here.

So what exactly is a hofje? Picture a quiet courtyard, tucked behind a street door, surrounded by small historic houses. These were not built by the city. They were built by wealthy citizens who, when writing their wills, decided to leave something meaningful behind. Part charity, part self-interest. If you housed widows and poor women in your lifetime, the thinking went, God might remember that favorably.

Amsterdam has 56 of these hidden courtyards. The oldest still standing dates back to 1614, built just after the Jordaan itself was laid out. Some belong to churches, others to private foundations. Many have been converted into private apartments, but a handful, like this one, still welcome curious visitors.

What makes hofjes so special is the contrast. Step through that door and the noise of the city simply disappears. Cobblestones, small gardens, a sense of stillness. It feels like a village folded inside a city.
