Across from Amsterdam's Central Station stands the imposing Basilica of St Nicholas. Designed by A.C. Bleijs, a renowned architect of the time, this church was built between 1884 and 1887. It is the third church in Amsterdam with the name St Nicolaas, alongside the Oude Kerk on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and the famous hideaway church 'Our Lord in the Attic'. The location of the basilica, amid the historic ramparts and the IJ, carries symbolic significance, in line with the rich history of the area.

The Basilica of St Nicolas not only functions as a place for religious gatherings, but is also an important cultural monument in Amsterdam. In addition to regular services, baptisms and funeral ceremonies take place there.

The strategic placement of the basilica, between the historic ramparts and the water of the IJ, emphasises the historical and symbolic significance of the location. This offers visitors a unique experience in the heart of the city, where they can feel and experience Amsterdam's rich history.

If the opportunity arises, it is definitely worth taking a look inside the basilica. The murals, the beautiful dome and especially the breathtaking stained-glass windows are absolutely enchanting. These works of art add to the impressive beauty and spiritual atmosphere of the church.
