We are in Antwerp’s vibrant Zuid district, in front of one of the city’s most impressive cultural treasures: the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA). Founded in 1810, the museum began with the collection of the Guild of Saint Luke, which shaped Antwerp’s artistic heart for centuries.

The building itself, designed by Jean-Jacques Winders and Frans Van Dijk, is a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture. Its façade is richly decorated with sculptures, and the surrounding gardens offer a peaceful escape from the busy city.

Inside, visitors discover masterpieces from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. The museum survived turbulent times, including the French occupation at the end of the eighteenth century, when many artworks were rescued and given a safe home here. Thanks to donations from King William I and former mayor Florent van Ertborn, the collection grew into one of the richest in Belgium.

After an extensive renovation of eleven years, which began in 2011, the KMSKA reopened in September 2022. Since then, visitors can admire historic rooms filled with works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Van Eyck, as well as modern galleries featuring art by Ensor, Magritte, and Modigliani.

The renewed museum also focuses on experience: virtual tours take you into Rubens’ studio, and interactive installations make art accessible for young and old. With this blend of past and present, the KMSKA continues to surprise and inspire.
