In November 1576, Antwerp was plunged into a nightmare. Spanish soldiers stationed in the citadel, long unpaid, mutinied. On November 4, they stormed the city — armed, ruthless, and out of control. What followed were three days of looting, burning homes, and mass violence. Peaceful marketplaces turned into battlegrounds, homes were emptied, and countless residents were killed, wounded, or robbed. Innocents, including women and children, suffered atrocious fates.

The Fury shook not only Antwerp but the entire region. Sixteen provinces, including Catholic territories, united: just days later in Ghent they signed the Pacification, an agreement to expel all Spanish troops from the Netherlands and restore internal peace. For Antwerp, however, it was too late: the city had been devastated. Thousands dead, a shattered economy, and destroyed cultural treasures ushered in a new era. Suddenly, Amsterdam began to rise as the preferred commercial hub — Antwerp’s dominance was broken.
