In the heart of Antwerp, near the quiet River Scheldt and the centuries-old cobblestone streets, stands the Church of Saint Paul. Its Gothic facade towers high above the city, leaving an immediate impression.

Inside, however, a different atmosphere awaits. Here, Baroque splendor dominates, with high domed ceilings adorned with delicate frescoes and artworks by masters such as Rubens, Van Dyck, and Jordaens. A special highlight is the Calvary Mountain, with sixty life-sized statues standing in silent reverence.

But the church also carries a story full of mystery: the tale of a stolen masterpiece. The Madonna of the Rosary, painted by Caravaggio in 1607, once graced the main altar, drawing both worshippers and art lovers. During the turbulent 18th century, however, the painting disappeared without a trace. Rumors spoke of secret deals and royal intrigue, but one fact remained: the work was taken from its sacred place.

For centuries, the mystery remained unsolved until the painting surfaced in the imperial palace in Vienna. There hung the original Madonna, claimed by Emperor Joseph II of Austria, who was known for his love of art.

Today, a humble copy hangs in Saint Paul’s Church, a quiet reminder of the lost masterpiece and Antwerp’s enduring respect for its heritage.
