The street you're standing on, Keistraat, looks ordinary enough today. But in the early 1940s, it was anything but. This is where Marcel Louette worked as a teacher, a man who refused to accept occupation as the new normal.

Louette, born in 1907 and known by his resistance alias "Fidelio," got to work almost immediately after the Germans arrived in June 1940. Starting from a liberal youth movement called the Jonge Geuzenwacht, he built a network that eventually grew into the White Brigade-Fidelio, with thousands of members spread across Flanders and Wallonia.

The brigade did everything the occupiers feared most. They printed and distributed underground newspapers, gathered intelligence on the Port of Antwerp, sheltered Jews, draft evaders, and Allied pilots, and carried out sabotage missions with quiet precision.

By the summer of 1942, Louette himself had to go into hiding. He was eventually arrested in May 1944 and dragged through some of the worst places the Nazi regime had to offer, from Breendonk to Sachsenhausen. He survived, was liberated in April 1945, and spent months recovering before dedicating his postwar life to supporting fellow resistance fighters.

For a man whose alias meant "faithful," he made the name look easy.
