Hidden behind an unassuming doorway in the city center lies a cobblestone alley that almost vanished forever.

The Vlaeykensgang is easy to walk past without noticing, which would be a genuine shame, because this narrow alley is quite possibly the oldest street in Antwerp. It dates back to the late 16th century, and stepping through its entrance feels like the city outside simply stops existing.

The cobblestones underfoot, the worn facades pressing in on either side, the way sound changes the moment you enter, it all adds up to something rare: a place that still feels genuinely old. No reconstruction, no theme park version of history. Just the real thing.

What makes this even more remarkable is how close it came to disappearing entirely. In the 1960s, Antwerp was caught up in the same building fever that swept through cities across Europe, and the city council had plans to demolish the Vlaeykensgang and replace it with new construction. A forgettable block in place of something irreplaceable.

The rescue came through Axel Vervoordt, an antique dealer with a sharp eye and, fortunately, deep pockets. He bought the alley and had it carefully restored, preserving every detail of its original character.

So next time someone dismisses antique dealers as people who just collect old things, you can point them right here.
