In 237 BC, a Carthaginian general stepped onto these Mediterranean shores with an army and a burning desire for revenge against Rome. Along the ancient coastline where the old Gothic Quarter now stands, legend claims that Hamilcar Barca established a settlement that would bear his family name. His own name meant lightning, and he lived up to it as one of Carthage's most brilliant military commanders.

Hamilcar Barca had fought Rome for six years during the First Punic War from 247 to 241 BC, using guerrilla tactics in Sicily that frustrated Roman forces. But Carthage lost the war, forced to surrender Sicily and pay massive tributes. Hamilcar refused to accept defeat. He saw Spain's silver mines and fertile lands as a way to rebuild Carthaginian power. Before sailing to Spain in 237 BC, Hamilcar took his 9 year old son Hannibal to a sacred altar and made him swear an oath that he would never be a friend to Rome.

That childhood promise would shape history. The boy grew into one of the ancient world's greatest generals, famously crossing the Alps with war elephants to invade Italy. While historians now believe the name Barcino came from the Iberian word Barkeno rather than the Barca family, the connection between this legendary commander and the city remains part of local tradition. Hamilcar died fighting in Spain in 228 BC, most likely drowning in a river while battling local tribes. His three sons carried on his mission against Rome.
