This ancient secret hides in plain sight behind a medieval doorway, where four towering Roman columns reach 9 meters toward the sky. At Carrer del Paradís in the Gothic Quarter, these magnificent pillars are all that survive of the Temple of Augustus, the most sacred building of ancient Barcino. The Romans built this temple between 15 and 13 BC to honor their first emperor, Augustus, who founded the colony during his reign.

The structure stretched 37 meters long and 17 meters wide, encircled by 34 elegant Corinthian columns. It dominated the Forum from atop Mont Tàber, the highest point in the Roman city, where magistrates conducted official business and merchants traded goods from across the Mediterranean. For four centuries, this temple stood as the religious and civic heart of Barcino, symbolizing Roman authority and imperial worship. When Christianity spread and the empire collapsed, the building was gradually dismantled.

Medieval builders salvaged its stones to construct new homes and churches, and the columns disappeared inside these structures. Three columns resurfaced unexpectedly in the late 19th century during construction work for the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya. A fourth column had been standing at Plaça del Rei since 1879 and was reunited with the others in 1956. The columns now stand freely accessible in a turquoise courtyard, revealing the city's Roman foundations to anyone who steps inside.
